Israel announced its first female ambassador to an Arab country Sunday among a list of 12 new appointments to positions that all required government approval.
Einat Schlein, an employee at the Foreign Ministry for the last 22 years, was named on the list as Israel's new ambassador to neighboring Jordan, with whom the US and possibly Israel are closely working against the threat of ISIS militants from Iraq and Syria.
- Schlein currently serves as head of a division within the Center for Political Research, an intelligence and analysis based branch of the foreign ministry.
The newly appointed ambassador will be headed to Amman, where she began her diplomatic career. Additionally, Schlein served in Israel's embassy in Washington.
Seven of the newly appointed officials are women, bringing their contribution to the list to over half.
Additional positions that were announced include ambassador to Romania, ambassador to Bulgaria, ambassador to Belgium, ambassador to Cyprus, ambassador to Azerbaijan, ambassador to Spain, ambassador to Mexico, ambassador to Ireland, ambassador to Slovakia, and the Economic Consul to Atlanta.
