Code Red blares through southern Israel, IDF says false alarms

Rocket alert sirens sounded in Hof Ashkelon and Sha'ar HaNegev regional councils.

Code Red rocket alert sirens blared through southern Israel on Thursday, for the second time since the end of Operation Protective Edge. The IDF's spokesman said the alarms were false alarms.

At around 11:40am, Code Red was sounded in Yad Mordechai and Netiv HaAsara in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council. Ten minutes later, Code Red sirens were sounded in the same area, as well as in Sha'ar HaNegev.

The IDF said light-weapon fire inside the Gaza Strip triggered the alert-system's sensors and caused the false alarm.

On Tuesday, the fragile long-term ceasefire between Israel and Hamas following Operation Protective Edge was broken when Gaza militants fired a rocket at southern Israel. No damages or injuries were reported.

Hamas said it was not aware of any rocket fire towards Gaza-border towns and reiterated its commitment to the ceasefire. The rocket was likely fired around 6:30 pm. No warning siren sounded in the towns of Eshkol Regional Council.
