US: Saudi Arabia, UAE played major role in airstrikes against IS in Syria

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, who joined the anti-jihadist coalition led by the US, played a major role in the recent air strikes in Syria against the Islamic State, the Pentagon said Thursday.

Ten of the 16 planes that bombed Islamic State targets in Syria on Wednesday night were Saudi or Emirati and they dropped 80 percent of the tonnage of explosives dropped, said the spokesman for the Pentagon, Admiral John Kirby.

American planes sent 18 of the 23 bombs dropped during the raids but the two Arab powers have used more powerful ammunition.
