Minister Peretz: Using chickens for atonement custom is unnecessary abuse

Environment Minister Amir Peretz called the public to avoid using chickens for the atonement ritual and said: "Yom Kippur is a day of reflection and it is particularly important to maintain our humanity and prevent unnecessary abuse of animals".

"Tens of thousands of chickens suffer unnecessarily abuse while being awung over people's heads and afterwards are sent for slaughter. Money can be substituted for the chicken and later can be given to charity," Peretz added.
