Police lock rioters inside Al-Aqsa mosque

Masked youths hurl stones, fireworks at police forces, after setting up barricades at entrance of mosque; officers drive assailants into compound.

Jerusalem police forces pushed back masked rioters into the Al-Aqsa mosque on Monday morning after they hurled stones and fireworks at officers following the end of morning prayers.

The city's police forces had been aware of the potential outbreak of violence after collecting intelligence about Palestinian youths who had slept the night before at the mosque. The youths had gathered stones and fireworks, and prepared Molotov cocktails in order to confront the police and disrupt visits by Jewish worshippers to the Temple Mount.

The assailants also set up barricades at the entrance of the mosque to prevent the closing of the door, using shoe cabinets, iron rods, wooden planks and a barbed wire fence.

Police forces say that the youths had intentionally planned in advance to harm police officers. After the forces spotted several masked men holding stones, a large police force under the command of Jerusalem District Police Commander Major- General Yossi Parienti entered the mosque and surprised the youths who fled into the al-Aqsa mosque.

After entering, the youths hid behind the barricades they had prepared, and hurled stones and fireworks at the officers. The police forces were able to push the rioters back into the mosque and remove the barricades. In addition, they sealed off the windows of the mosque to prevent rioters from throwing through them stones and firebombs.

Visits to the Temple Mount compound by Jews and tourists will continue as usual today. Jerusalem police said it would operate to arrest the rioters. Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch is expected to visit the Temple Mount compound later on in the day.
