Mortar falls in Israeli territory near Syrian border

No injuries or damages reported; fierce fighting continues between Syrian army and rebel forces in Quneitra.

A mortal shell from Syria landed in Israeli territory Tuesday morning, during fierce fighting in nearby Quneitra between Syrian President Bashar Assad’s army and opposing rebel forces. There were no casualties or damage.

In recent hours, sources from the Syrian opposition have reported ongoing battles between Assad’s forces and rebel forces, including Jabhat al-Nusra militants – the Al-Qaeda branch in Syria - near the villages of Samdaniyah and Al-Hamidiyah, close to Quneitra.

The opposition forces have reported Assad’s army is using artillery fire and aerial bombardment.

A month ago, a mortal shell was fired into the Golan Heights in northern Israel by the border with Syria. There were no injuries as a result of the incident. The shelling was an apparent spillover from fighting between Assad’s forces and rebels. A mortar shelling exploded on the Syrian side of the border as well.

“Spillover” fire from fighting in Syria moderately injured an IDF officer in August. The IDF returned artillery fire as a response. The IDF prohibited farmers who work near the border from going to work after the incident.

A month prior, 25 mortal shells fell in Israeli territory during clashes between Syrian forces and rebels near the village of Al-Madriya by the Quneitra border crossing. The shells fell in open areas causing no injuries or damage.
