The United States and Israel top the list of countries whose residents visited Berlin in the first eight months of 2014, according to figures released Monday by the German capital's tourism office.

The US leads the list with 620,000 overnight stays by American tourists in Berlin from January to August – a 7.7% increase from the same period last year. Israeli tourists came in second with 243,000 overnight stays – a 17.8% jump from 2013.

About 66,500 Israeli tourists stayed in Berlin in the same period in 2005, and some 77,025 in January-August 2009.

The Israelis also came in second in the number of nights spent in Berlin hotels with an average of 3.7 nights. The first place went to tourists from the United Arab Emirates with an average of 4.1 nights. Visitors from the Gulf states, the US and China lead in the number of overall tourist entries to Germany. In the first eight months of the year, Germany recorded 51.6 million overnight stays of foreign tourists – a 5.6% increase from the same period in 2013.

Among the European countries, Holland sends the highest number of tourists to its neighboring country, followed by Switzerland, Austria, Denmark and Poland. Israeli tourist entries to Germany recorded a 2.7% increase from 2013.

Israelis "contributed" about 600,000 overnight stays to Germany's hotels in the first eight months of the year alone, a 12.7% jump from the same period last year. In all of 2012, Israeli tourist stays in Germany totaled 660,000. In 2013, the number went up to 739,000.

About 20 flights are offered every week on the Tel Aviv-Berlin route by the El Al, Air Berlin, Germanwings, Israir and easyJet airlines.
