'US-led Syria strikes kill at least 860'

A Syrian activist group says US-led coalition airstrikes against the Islamic State group and other extremists have killed more than 860 people, including civilians, since they began in mid-September.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the vast majority those killed -- 746 people -- have been Islamic State militants. It says another 68 people killed were members of al-Qaida's Syrian affiliate known as the Nusra Front.

The Observatory also said on Wednesday that at least 50 civilians, including eight children and five women, have been killed in the airstrikes.

The US-led coalition's aerial campaign in Syria began on Sept. 23. The Islamic State group has been the primary target, although on at least two occasions the United States has carried out strikes targeting the Nusra Front as well.
