Iraq officials: IS group attacks border checkpoint

Iraqi officials say militants with the Islamic State group have attacked a checkpoint along the border with Syria, killing at least 16 Iraqi border policemen.

A senior army official says the attack took place in the town of al-Walid on the Iraqi side of the border on Monday. At least five officers were also wounded in the attack. A government official in Iraq's western Anbar province confirmed the report.

The Islamic State group has maintained control of most of the border crossings between Iraq and Syria since its blitz earlier this year. The militant group currently controls about one-third of both Iraq and Syria.
