Israel Railways required to examine enviromental impact of hazardous material prior to opening Eilat route

Israel railways will be required to compile a report to examine the environmental impact of the shipping of hazardous material to Eilat as part of a plan to construct a railway path to the southern Israeli city.

The decision to require the report before the construction of the new railway was made by the Southern District Committee following demands by environmental groups and in light of the fact that the materials will be transported in close proximity to population centers.

The director general of the Ministry of Environment Protection David Leffler said, “There is no reason that hundreds of tons of hazardous substances will pass through Be’er Sheva and nobody will discuss the effects of the matter on the public and ways to prevent dangerous incidents. We are happy that our insistence led to the decision that was made.”
