A blast was heard in the vicinity of the international airport in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Wednesday, possibly caused by a car bomb, a Reuters witness and a security official said.
A security adviser, based at the airport, told Reuters by telephone there had been a suspected VBIED, or vehicle-borne improvised explosive device, in the area, without giving further details. The Somali Islamist group al Shabaab has often used car bombs but there was no immediate claim of responsibility.
