US Airways flight from Tel Aviv makes emergency landing in Rome

Italian media reports say thirteen crew members and passengers fell ill during flight; reason may be due to malfunction in ventilation system.

A plane flying from Tel Aviv to Philadelphia was forced to make an emergency landing in Rome on Saturday after two passengers and 11 members of the crew were taken ill, Italian media reported.

The US Airways plane landed at the Fiumicino airport in the Italian capital and requested medical assistance for 13 people suffering from red eyes and vomiting.

According to reports, the passengers and crew affected were checked by airport emergency doctors before being taken to the G.B Grassi di Ostia hospital near Rome.

US Airways issued the following statement: "US Airways flight 797 from Tel Aviv (TLV) to Philadelphia (PHL) made an unscheduled landing in Rome (FCO) due to a medical emergency. The aircraft, an Airbus A330 with 129 passengers, landed safely in Rome and all passengers have been re-accommodated on other flights. Two passengers and the crew were evaluated by medical personnel and have since been released."

A malfunction in the Airbus A330's ventilation system could be to blame, the reports said.
