King Abdullah: Door still open for Middle East peace process

Jordanian king says critical to reach solution for Israeli-Palestinian conflict before end of Obama's term, adds that lack of progress would hinder fight against international Muslim extremism.

John Kerry's Middle East peace plan "has not failed yet", King Abdullah II of Jordan said in an interview with PBS' Charlie Rose that aired Friday, adding that “it’s still an ongoing issue. The door is still open".

The Jordanian king claimed that a meeting between himself, Secretary of State John Kerry, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi that took place a couple of weeks ago in Jordan was successful and presented a "very strong final package."

Abdullah told Charlie Rose that it would be critical to reach a final solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict before the end of President Obama's second term.

"We're now moving on to something much bigger," said Abdullah, referring to the international struggle against the Islamic State group and international Jihad.

Abdullah said that if the Israeli-Palestinian solution would not be solved, it would prevent the international coalition from succeeding in its fight against international Muslim extremism.

The Jordanian king said that "all roads lead to Jerusalem," and the continued tension in Israel between Jews and Arabs in the holy city has an effect on extremism world wide.

Abdullah did not specifically say what prevented the sides from reaching a solution at their meeting in Jordan. He said lack of trust was part of the issue and hinted that the sides would continue talks in order to overcome the main obstacles.

Abdullah also noted that "almost every final status solution has to do with Jordan."
