Ruben Marial Benjamin becomes first South Sudanese ambassador to Israel

Ruben Marial Benjamin presented President Reuven Rivlin with his writ of appointment in a ceremony at the president’s residence which made him the first ambassador of South Sudan to Israel on Wednesday.

Benjamin, a former professional basketball player, arrived in Israel a few weeks ago and opened the first South Sudan embassy in Israel. South Sudan, which was established in 2011, is the youngest and poorest nation in the world.

This is the 26th embassy of South Sudan to be opened since its establishment. Israel does not have an embassy in South Sudan and relations are managed by an ambassador who is not a citizen of South Sudan, Hanan Goder, who sits at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem and visits the South Sudan capital of Juba every few months.
