Israeli film nominated for Golden Globe

'Gett,' directed by Shlomi and Ronit Elkabetz, is one of five nominees in foreign film category. Television series co-created by Israeli director Hagai Levi nominated for three awards.

The Israeli film "Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem," directed by siblings Ronit and Shlomi Elkabetz, has been nominated for a Golden Globe in the foreign film category.

"I'm in shock," Ronit Elkabetz told Ynet. "They told me with my suitcases packed a moment before my return to Israel. I'm overjoyed. There are no words. All the hard work and the road we traveled were worth it. We want to bring Viviane's voice to as wide an audience as possible, and to raise awareness of these women's plight, wherever they may be."

The film concludes the Viviane Amsalem trilogy, following the protagonist's divorce trial and exposing the absurd aspects of the rabbinical institution. It won Israel's Ofir prize recognizing the best Israeli film of the year, and was selected as Israel's submission in the foreign film category of the Academy Awards.

At the Globes, "Gett" will compete against submissions from Poland, Russia, Sweden, and Estonia, meaning it is the only non-European nominee.

"Gett" premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The decades-old Hollywood trade magazine "Variety" called the film "expertly written" and "brilliantly acted."

Meanwhile, the Showtime television drama "The Affair", co-created by Israeli director Hagai Levi, was nominated for Best TV Series, Drama, as well as two acting awards. The series received rave reviews in American publications.

"There aren’t many series at the moment quite like it or as good," the New York Times wrote.

Variety wrote that it was "meticulously crafted," while TV Guide said it "promises to be a show to remember."

Levi was also the co-creator of the critically-acclaimed HBO series "In Treatment."
