Holocaust survivors' homecare funding increased

The Jewish Claims Conference says it is increasing funding for social service organizations around the world to help care for Holocaust survivors who are in increasingly poor health as they age.

The Claims Conference said in a statement Monday that for 2015 it would raise funding to the organizations by $80 million to a total of $365 million, making use of new funds negotiated with Germany and its own resources derived from recovered Jewish properties and elsewhere.

Claims Conference president Julius Berman says the funds will be used primarily for homecare but also medical care, transport and other vital needs.

Germany has paid around $87 billion in compensation for Nazi crimes, primarily to Jewish survivors, and agreed this year to an additional $785 million for home care through 2017.
