Failed London subway bombers lose appeal bid
Four men convicted of a failed plot to bomb the London subway system have lost an attempt to appeal against their convictions.
Muktar Said Ibrahim, Ramzi Mohammed and Yassin Omar argued that their trials were unfair because they were denied access to lawyers during police questioning. Ismail Abdurahman, who was convicted as an accomplice, claimed that a witness statement he provided was later used against him.
The European Court of Human Rights ruled Tuesday that the delay in granting access to lawyers was permissible because there had been "an exceptionally serious and imminent threat to public safety."
The men attempted to set off home-made bombs on London's Underground on July 21, 2005, two weeks after suicide bombers killed 52 commuters in the city. The bombs failed to detonate fully.
