Temple Mount activist Glick running for Likud spot

Two months after being seriously wounded in an assassination attempt, Rabbi Yeuhda Glick announced his running for spot on the Likud election ticket, but says he does not want or expect attain a spot that would see him turn into an MK in the next Knesset

Temple Mount activist Rabbi Yehuda Glick, 49, who was seriously wounded after a Palestinian attempted to assassinate him this October has announced he is running in the Likud primaries slated to be held before Israel's March general elections.

He is hoping to win the number 33 spot on the party ticket, the place reserved for a representative from Judea and Samaria (West Bank), which will probably not make it into the Knesset as the Likud is unlikely to garner more than 25 seats, according to the most generous polls.

"I want to run for an unrealistic spot," Glick explained, "I want to preserve my spot in the Likud and maintain my presence in the party."

In the previous elections, Glick held the number 56 spot on the party roster and according to him, "my wife forbids me to go for a realistic spot, she makes the call," he jokingly said.

Glick fights for the rights of Jews to enter and pray in the Temple Mount, which is currently forbidden as part of the status quo agreement between Israel, Jordan and the religious Muslim authority charged with managing the flashpoint holy site.

Glick further said he will continue to "be someone who is very radical in his opinions. Radical in my demand for human rights, radical in my demand for zero tolerance in the face of violence and terror and in my demand the police be honest and fair."

Though affiliated with the radical right, even within the Likud, Glick is considered a pleasant and soft-spoken man with honest intentions to foster interfaith tolerance between Muslims, Jews and Christians.
