BAGHDAD - Kurdish peshmerga forces have launched a large-scale military operation against Islamic State group extremists in country's north, Iraq's Kurdish authorities said Wednesday.
A statement by the northern Kurdish authorities said the operation aims at pushing the Islamic State group from an area of about 120 square kilometers (46 square miles) outside the militant-held city of Mosul.
It added that the US-led international coalition also began launching airstrikes against militants' positions to support the ground offensive.
