US terror suspect to be released to halfway house

A man accused of trying to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State group will be released to a halfway house while his case is pending.

Chief US District Judge Michael Davis said Tuesday that Abdullahi Yusuf will have limited hours outside the house and will be monitored.

The 18-year-old is charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. Charges say FBI agents stopped him at the Minneapolis airport last year as he attempted to leave the US for Turkey.

Yusuf's attorneys asked that he be freed and allowed to participate in courses promoting civic involvement. Davis ordered probation officials to talk with program designers to explore that as an option.
