8 dead, 28 hurt in major road accident in Negev

Tractor, bus and car collide near Lehavim junction; Magen David Adom declares mass casualty event; most on bus were Bedouin heading home from prayers in Jerusalem.

Eight women in their fifties were killed and 28 others were injured Tuesday in a major road accident in the Negev. The accident occurred shortly before 2:30 pm, when a bus, a tractor and a private car collided close to the Lehavim Junction.

 

 

Magen David Adom in the Negev region received a call about the accident at 2:25pm, and declared a mass casualty event. All medical teams in the region rushed to the scene, and administered medical aid to dozens of injured people.

The head of the transport company whose bus was involved in the accident said that most of the bus passengers were Bedouin who were heading home after visiting the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

 

"The bus was hit by a truck carrying too much cargo," he said. "Only the left side of the bus was damaged, and on the other side everyone escaped unharmed. I spoke to the driver and he is fine too."  

 

The highway was closed in the wake of the crash, a spokeswoman for Israel Police said.

Magen David Adom said that most of the injured were conscious, and were being evacuated to Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva. Helicopters were also dispatched to the scene to evacuate the injured. Fourteen fire fighting teams were also sent to the scene and were assisting in extricating the injured from the bus.
