Seven dead as commuter train hits car near New York City

A crowded New York commuter train struck a car near suburban White Plains during Tuesday evening's rush hour, sparking an explosion and a fire that killed seven people, officials said. Six passengers on the train died, as well as the driver of the car, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told a news conference after visiting what he said was a devastating scene.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, known as MTA, said there were at least 12 serious injuries on the train after it hit a Jeep Cherokee that was stuck on the tracks at 6:30 p.m.
