British jihadi who faked own death jailed for 12 years

A British jihadi who faked his death in an attempt to make it easier to return to England from Syria unnoticed has been sentenced to 12 years in prison. Imran Khawaja, who attended an extremist training camp in Syria for six months, had appeared in photographs posing with a man's severed head and dead fighters.

The 27-year-old was arrested by port officials in southern England's Dover when he tried to return home with his cousin. A judge said Friday that Khawaja was a risk to the public and that it was clear he had shown increasing interest in Islamic jihadist material in the past few years. Khawaja had admitted preparation of terrorist acts, attending a terrorism training camp, receiving weapons training and possessing a firearm for terrorism use.
