Most senior US senator to skip Netanyahu speech

Sen. Patrick Leahy, the US Senate's most senior lawmaker, says he will skip the Israeli prime minister's speech to Congress next month. In a statement Tuesday, the Democrat criticized a "tawdry and high-handed stunt" arranged by House Republican leaders who invited Benjamin Netanyahu to address lawmakers on March 3 about Iran.

Leahy joins a handful of House and Senate Democrats who have said they would skip the speech that comes in the middle of delicate negotiations involving the United States, Western powers and Iran over its nuclear program.
