Samat is the second person to die as a result of the incident, which occurred as some 100,000 ultra-Orthodox men turned out to pay their respects to Rabbi Shmuel Halevi Wosner in Bnei Brak. Two others were also critically injured.
The police said Sunday that they would open an investigation into possible negligence. They were to collect witness testimony and examine whether permits for the procession were properly obtained. A police source said arrests were possible.
Some of the injured were hurt when the rabbi's coffin was brought out onto Desler Street in the predominantly Haredi city close to Tel Aviv. Witnesses said the crowd surged towards the coffin, trampling the victims.
Magen David Adom rescue service said they had treated a total of 65 people following the incident.
