Afghan official: Attack in north kills policeman, prosecutor
Militants stormed an Afghan government compound in a northern city on Thursday, killing a policeman and a prosecutor and wounding 10 other people, a police official said.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack in Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital of Balkh province. The city is one of Afghanistan's most economically stable and relatively developed, and insurgent attacks are rare.
The assault started with five attackers making their way into the compound housing the regional chief prosecutor's office in the morning hours, said acting police chief Abdul Raziq Qaderi.
The militants, who threw a hand grenade to blow up the compound entrance and clear their way in, wore military uniforms and also had explosives vests, Qaderi said. One policeman and one prosecutor were killed.
