Verdi's "Jewish" opera tells the story of Jerusalem's destruction by King Nebuchadnezzar (the Babylonian King Nabucco),
who exiled the Israelites to Babylon, and the Jewish people's attempt to stop the tragedy.
In his first true operatic success, Verdi composed a political opera which emphasized Italy's grim state as a shattered country which called for a revolt against the foreign occupier and sought to unite the country under the flag of one king.
The opera's immortal chorus of the Hebrew slaves soon became Italy's unofficial anthem, and is still considered one of the most patriotic musical segments in Italian history.
"Nabucco" will be performed at the Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center until April 25.
