Wife of Israeli opposition leader Herzog's car attacked

Zionist Union leader Isaac Herzog's wife's car was pelted with stone outside their home in north Tel Aviv; unclear if attack was political or violent prank.

A stone was thrown Monday at the car of Michal Herzog, the wife of Isaac Herzog, head of the Zionist Union, Israel's second largest party, which will in most likelihood lead the opposition during the next government.

Her car's rear windshield was cracked in the attack, but Herzog herself was not wounded in the incident. The motivation behind the incident is unclear and it could be either political or a random and dangerous prank.

Police have begun their investigation into the incident, but no arrests have been yet made. Herzog herself phoned the police during the incident. She then continued on her way with a cracked rear window.

During the election campaign, security was vamped up around both Herzogs, especially when the Zionist Union was leading in the polls and it seemed likely that Isaac Herzog could serve as Israel's next prime minister.

The Herzogs said in a statement that "in wake of media reports that the Michal's windshield was broken after she left the house, we want to stress that everything is fine and we plan to continue with our daily routine.

"The police are investigating the incident and we are certain they will exhaust all possible leads. I big thanks to all those who expressed their concern."

Though aligned as a center-left party, the Zionist Union is historically linked to Israel's generally left-wing Labor party. In recent years, leftist have been increasingly targeted by far right extremists who view them as an existential threat to Israel.

Most recently, Yehonatan Geffen, a prominent Israeli poet and writer was attacked for being a "leftist traitor", as his attacker put it, after Geffen said that those who voted for Prime Minister Netanyahu "should not cry when (their) children die in the next dumb conflict."

Firebrand Israeli Arab MK Hanin Zoabi was also attacked a few months ago, with a far right activist pouring a soft drink over her and pelting her with the bottle at a political event in which she was set to speak.
