The IDF struck targets in the northern Gaza strip on Thursday night, hours after a rocket was launched from Gaza and landed in the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council in southern Israel.
A red alert siren sounded at around 9 pm local time at a time when Israelis were wrapping up their Independence Day celebrations.
