Report: Journalists face deadliest time 'in recent history'

None

A new report says the twin threat of extremist groups and the governments that restrict liberties to combat them has led to "the most deadly and dangerous period for journalists in recent history."

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists released its annual report on press freedom Monday. The collection of essays explores Syria's deadly reporting landscape, censorship during the Ebola outbreak, the jailing of journalists in Egypt and Ethiopia, and even how journalists last year were used in extremists' propaganda films. One essay by CPJ staffers warns of non-state actors like the Islamic State group, "These organizations are not merely producing videos; they are acting as competing media outlets."
