German diplomat: Iran deal alternative 'not very attractive'

COLUMBUS - Alternatives to a deal to curb Iran's nuclear program are "not very attractive," a top German diplomat said Thursday, noting that Germany and other nations are ready to move beyond sanctions despite what the US Congress might do.

The German ambassador to the US, Peter Wittig, in remarks to the Columbus Metropolitan Club, said that while the US Congress would probably be willing to impose new sanctions, other countries would not follow.

"And this universal sanctions regime would crumble," he said. "And that would, in my opinion, unleash this arms race for a nuclear weapon in the region."
