Lapid forming 'shadow gov't' within own party

New gov't has yet to be sworn in, but Yesh Atid leader already set up alternative cabinet to point out its mistakes; 'We will be waiting for them behind every corner'.

The new government has yet to be sworn in, but Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid has already established a "shadow government" that will do everything in its power to point out its mistakes.

The 11 members of the Yesh Atid party have divided amongst themselves the supervision of the government ministries, with each taking responsibility for one or more offices according to their knowledge and experience in the field.

For example, Lapid will watch over the functioning of the Foreign and Finance Ministries, Ofer Shelah will track the performance of the Defense Ministry and the Culture Ministry, Yael German will monitor the Health Ministry, Shai Piron will will track the activities of the Education Ministry, Meir Cohen will monitor the Welfare and Social Services Ministry and Yaakov Perry will keep an eye on the Economy Ministry as well as on diplomatic negotiations.

From now on, all members of the Yesh Atid list will work to expose the mistakes and injustices committed by the government in its various offices, while attempting to brand themselves as the "sane alternative" to the government.

"We will be waiting for them behind every corner, making sure they are doing everything in their power for the citizens of Israel and not for their political survival," said Lapid. Other members of his party added: "We will put all offices under a magnifying glass and reveal any wrong decision made by the ministers."

On Friday, Yesh Atid sent letters warning the attorney general and the Knesset speaker against holding a vote on Monday on expanding the number of ministers for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's fourth term.

The letters were served as notice before faction chief Yair Lapid petitions the High Court of Justice against the move. Lapid previously warned that he would take such actions in an interview to Ynet earlier in the week.

The bill proposed by the Netanyahu government seeks to temporarily repeal a law passed in the previous Knesset which limited the number of ministers to 18 and the number of deputies to four.

The new legislation asks that the limitation be revoked for the current Knesset, only to be reinstated after the next elections. The government will also request to be allowed to appoint ministers without portfolio – a political institution that was eliminated by Yesh Atid in the 19th Knesset.
