Jordan court sentences 8 in alleged Hezbollah attack plot

AMMAN - Jordan's state security court handed down prison terms Wednesday for eight defendants in an alleged decade-old plot by Lebanon's Hezbollah militia to attack US troops in Jordan, defense lawyers said.

The Jordanian leader of the cell, who had been charged with communicating with Hezbollah, was given 10 years in prison, said lawyers Fawaz al-Boqour and Fadel al-Qalab.

Other members in the group were given terms of two or three years, including for charges of possessing weapons, they said. A Syrian defendant was sentenced in absentia to 15 years.

Jordanian media have reported that the cell had also planned to attack the Israeli embassy in Jordan. Al-Qalab said there was no such charge in the indictment.
