Lawyer: Alleged assault prompted by Prophet Muhammed cartoon
CHICAGO - A 21-year-old man awaiting trial on terrorism charges faces new allegations of attacking a fellow inmate who his attorney says taunted him with a cartoon drawing of the Prophet Muhammad.
Adel Daoud attended an initial hearing Tuesday in Chicago federal court. Five new counts include assault with intent to murder and using a makeshift weapon to seriously injure.
Defense attorney Thomas Durkin told reporters the alleged assault was prompted by a Muhammad drawing by the other inmate. The indictment doesn't offer details.
At an earlier hearing in the terrorism case, Daoud insisted on making a statement to Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman. He told her "the world is united in a war against Islam." He added there's a conspiracy against him that includes the judge hiring Freemasons as jurors.
