Monsoon floods kill 14 in India's remote northeast
Monsoon flooding killed at least 14 people and forced around 200,000 to leave their water-logged homes and take shelter in state-run camps this past week in India's northeastern Assam state, officials said Saturday.
The army used boats to rescue marooned people in northern and western parts of the state. The flooding is the worst in the past three years, affecting nearly 600,000 people in 19 of the state's 27 districts, officials said.
Police officer Diganta Borah said a van carrying wedding guests plunged into a river Friday night in Dhubri district. Rescuers found four bodies on Saturday and rescued six occupants. Two other people were missing.
A woman and a child were missing and feared dead after a boat capsized before dawn in the area, about 280 kilometers (175 miles) west of Gauhati, the state capital, Borah said. Two people riding a motorbike were swept away from a flooded road in Dhubri district.
