The week's best Middle East photos

This week, migrants traveling to Europe continued to face danger, mass protests erupted in Lebanon and Iraq, and Egypt sentenced three journalists to prison.

In the Middle East this past week, workers in Libya collected the bodies of migrants who drowned while trying to make their way across the Mediterranean to Europe. The death toll continued to rise after two boats capsized off the western coastal city of Zuwara with an estimated 500 migrants onboard.

In Lebanon, discontent over garbage piling up in the streets of Beirut has turned into mass protests against the political class that has dominated Lebanon since the end of the country's civil war in 1990.

In Egypt, a court sentenced three Al-Jazeera English journalists to three years in prison on charges that they were mouthpieces for the banned Muslim Brotherhood group and had aired falsified footage intended to damage national security. The journalists and the network deny the allegations and the long-running trial has been widely criticized by diplomats and press freedom advocates.

In Jordan, international charity Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) prepares to inaugurate a new reconstructive surgery hospital specifically for war victims.

In Iraq, tens of thousands rallied in Baghdad and other cities in support of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's government reform drive. Meanwhile, in northern Iraq, the Kurdish regional government says its forces killed 25 Islamic State militants and cleared nine villages in a new offensive to sweep out the extremist group.

And in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, gunbattles between Indian and Pakistani troops in recent weeks have killed at least 18 civilians and wounded scores on both sides.
