Palestinians expect 'hundreds of leaders' at UN flag-raising

The Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations says he expects "hundreds of leaders" to attend the raising of the Palestinian flag outside U.N. headquarters late this month.

The General Assembly last week overwhelmingly approved the Palestinians' flag-raising proposal, with just eight states opposing.

Ambassador Riyad Mansour told reporters Tuesday that the flag will be raised Sept. 30, the day that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas addresses the annual gathering of world leaders at the U.N.

Last week's vote also approved the raising of the flag of the Holy See, which is the U.N.'s only other non-member observer state.

Two additional flagpoles have been erected, but it's not clear when the Holy See will raise its flag. It has said it will not do so before Pope Francis' U.N. visit Sept. 25.
