Metal detectors planned at Temple Mount entrance

At least 300 arrests since disturbances began; hundreds of Palestinians clash with police; Jewish teen girls suspected of attacking Palestinian with tear gas.

The Israeli Police has decided to place metal detectors at the entrance to the Temple Mount, Interim Police Chief Bentzi Sau said on Sunday, in order to prevent people from bringing weapons to al-Aqsa Mosque.

Metal detectors have already been placed in the Old City following the recent knife attacks that took place in the neighborhood.

The plan is to be presented to the Cabinet, Sau told the press. He added that police are not coordinating the initiative with the Waqf, which administrates the Temple Mount, because the detectors are to be placed outside the actual Temple Mount.

Sau also announced that 300 suspects have been arrested since the beginning of the latest spate of rioting, and 37 people who threw stones and firebombs were shot by security forces using Ruger rifle since its use was approved.

"Use of the Ruger has led to a significant decrease in incidents," said Sau.

In addition, Sau noted that recent terror attacks have mostly targeted haredim and Israelis in uniform (soldiers and police), saying 68 police officers have been wounded since the start of recent disturbances.

Sau's announcement came as violence and public disturbances continued to sweep through Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza border.

Around 500 Palestinians clashed with security forces near the Huwwara checkpoint in the West Bank. Demonstrators threw stones and firebombs, as well as using slingshots against Israeli forces using Ruger rifles against the main agitators.

Demonstrations near Gaza City's Shujai'yah neighborhood in the northern Gaza Strip saw around 150 protesters attempting to cross through a gap in the border fence that was created on Friday, but were pushed back.

Police also received a report of a group of Jewish girls in Jerusalem who used tear gas to attack a Palestinian employee at a store. Police detained three suspects for questioning.

Earlier Sunday, Palestinians from Gaza opened fire at a team of workers carrying out maintenance to the border fence in the Eshkol Regional Council. No injuries were reported, but the vehicle used by the team was damaged.

At least four Israelis were wounded by thrown rocks on Sunday.
