Abu Sayyaf militants free kidnapped Philippine town mayor

A Philippine military official says a town mayor has been freed by Abu Sayyaf militants after six months of jungle captivity in the south.

Army Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado said Tuesday that constant military and police assaults had forced the militants to release Mayor Gemma Adana of Naga town in southern Zamboanga Sibugay province.

Muslim religious leaders brought Adana to the house of Governor Abdusakur Tan of Sulu province, who notified the military about her release. She was taken to a military hospital for a checkup.

Gunmen barged into Adana's house in Naga and took her to Sulu by boat in April.
