New York City's mayor, Bill De Blasio, has kicked off a visit to Israel on Saturday at a time of heightened tensions after weeks of Israeli-Palestinian violence.
The mayor met his Tel Aviv counterpart, Ron Huldai, in the seaside city on Saturday before attending an event at a mixed Jewish and Palestinian school.
Later Saturday, he was to travel to Jerusalem to meet that city's mayor, as well as victims of recent Palestinian stabbing attacks at a hospital.
