US treasury sanctions senior Taliban leader

The US Treasury Department is sanctioning a member of the Taliban leadership council for allegedly working to raise millions to bankroll the militant group's military operations in Afghanistan.

Treasury's action on Tuesday freezes any property that senior Taliban leader Torek Agha has within US jurisdiction and bans Americans from doing transactions with him.

Treasury says as of late 2014, Agha served on a Taliban regional leadership council that directs Taliban activities and was a key commander and member of the Taliban's military council.

According to Treasury, Agha has also worked several years funneling millions from donors in the Gulf to Taliban coffers.
