Swiss government to ease Iran sanctions along with EU, UN

The Swiss government says it plans "in principle" to ease sanctions against Iran in line with the European Union and the United Nations following an international accord on Tehran's nuclear program.

The Federal Council said Wednesday it has instructed the Economy Ministry to prepare changes to the measures taken against the Islamic republic, which "open new perspectives for cooperation with Iran."

The move follows a deal struck on July 14 and fully adopted on Sunday between Iran and Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the US, which aims to assuage international concerns about Tehran's nuclear program. Iran has insisted its nuclear ambitions are purely for peaceful purposes, not making weapons.

The Swiss government said its sanctions would remain until Iran carried out an "action plan" outlined in that accord.
