Israeli-Palestinian war of words at Security Council

Palestinian foreign minister: Our children are targeted by 'occupation forces'; Israel's UN ambassador: Palestinian attacks are unprovoked.

WASHINGTON - The political gap between Israel and the Palestinians was illustrated on Thursday during a UN Security Council session, with both Israeli and Palestinian representatives making accusations regarding the current violence.

Danny Danon, Israel's ambassador to the international body, rejected the concept of a "cycle of violence", arguing that terror attacks against Israelis were unprovoked.

Riyad al-Maliki, the Palestinian foreign minister, placed the blame squarely on Israeli "incitement and provocations" and a lack of international intervention.

Danon said the occasion was not the way he envisioned his first address at the Security Council, coming as it did during a time of heightened violence at home.

"Let me make one thing clear," said Danon. "This is not a 'cycle of violence'. These are simply unprovoked attacks against Israelis for no reason other than the fact that they are Jews living in their historic homeland. "

Danon added that "any country whose people are attacked in the streets on a daily basis would act in the exact same way."

He said citizens throughout Israel have to look over their shoulders in their own neighborhoods. "Mothers and fathers worry that their children will be knifed to death when they leave the house and children are worried their parents won't make it home. This is the true meaning of terror. When you ignore this deliberate corruption of the minds of children, you are not part of the solution – you are a part of the problem.

Danon declared that Israel has no intention of "infringing the rights of Muslims in the sites that are holy to them", adding that claims that a Jewish desire to pray at the Temple Mount was part of a plan to attack mosques was a lie. Danon then noted that the statement he had just read was issued back in 1928 – showing that these claims were made 20 years before Israel was established.

Israel is committed to maintaining the status quo on the Temple Mount, said Danon, and will not accept an international presence there.

The Palestinian minister, for his part, said: "Core issues will only be resolved by an end to Israel's occupation of Palestinian land. The continuation of such an unjust and grave situation is a threat to both regional and international peace and security."

Al-Maliki said that the escalation on the ground was "undoubtedly" the result of a lack of intervention by the international community.

"Our Palestinian people, particularly our children, are being killed, targeted by the Israeli occupation forces," said al-Maliki. "They are denied fundamental right to life because of their national and religious identities. Their legitimate rejection of illegal occupation is being faced with killing and destruction.

"Incitements and provocations continue in al-Haram al-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary, as the Temple Mount is known by Muslims) and the al-Aqsa Mosque – attacks, incitement by the Israeli extremists and the officials against Palestinian civilians. Day after day we watch this," al-Maliki declared.
