The official video of the event, which was posted by the school, featured a student reading a text which included a prayer for the souls of the shaheeds (martyrs), followed by a moment of silence in their memory. A sermon which included Koranic verses in honor of the “martyrs’” souls was read during the ceremony.
"Our dear martyrs sacrificed their lives for their country so that we can live with dignity. We must remember them and ask for mercy towards them and comfort for their families. We shall not abandon our country and we will complete what they have started and planned," said one of the hundreds of students who participated in the ceremony.
The school is located in what is considered to be a good neighborhood, which is host to the national police headquarters, as well as the offices of the Ministry of Justice, and the Ministry of Construction and Housing.
Like many schools in East Jerusalem, the private school operates according to a Palestinian curriculum. The Ministry of Education has claimed that they are prevented from interfering with the school's curriculum.
The Jerusalem Municipality said in response: "This is a private school that is not supervised by the Ministry of Education or the Jerusalem Municipality, and therefore we have no authority to deal with the issue."
"One must look upon these prayers with severity and as an act of support for encouraging terrorist acts," said Meor Tsemach the chairman of Lech Yerushalayim which promotes the unity of Jerusalem. "We cannot accept a situation in which racism, hatred and incitement are encouraged in schools under the sovereignty and supervision of the State of Israel" .
