Militants stage rare attack behind Kurdish front line in N. Iraq

Islamist militants launched a rare attack in Kurdish territory in northern Iraq on Tuesday, breaching a local government compound near several oilfields across the frontline that divides Kurdish forces and Islamic State fighters.

A policeman at the scene said a suicide bomber blew himself up at a checkpoint clearing the way for other militants to enter the compound at the town of Dibis 50 km (30 miles) south of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish autonomous region,

He said at least two of his colleagues had been killed in the initial explosion and fighting between the militants and Kurdish security forces was continuing.
