Vogue: inspired by modest fashion

Vogue: Orthodox-wear is sexy

Just when we thought the debate about Orthodox 'layering' look was behind us, along comes Vogue with religiously-inspired 'Fall 2015's sexiest trend.'

Vogue magazine has crowned the ultra-Orthodox layering style as "an unlikely inspiration for Fall 2015's sexiest trend," even giving tips on how to get the "Bnei Brak style."

Only two years ago a group of religious fashion followers protested online against Israeli fashion companies, compelling them to include clothes in their collections that met the demands of modesty.

But what was thought of by others as limiting the downsides of Orthodoxy has been defined by Vogue as an inspiration for the trend of the season.

The concept, it must be said, is not new. Fashion houses such as Jean-Paul Gaultier have released a number of pieces to the world with a definite "Mea Shearim" twist.

This time, however, Vogue has taken on the challenge of promoting a trendy evening outfit, the "night slip dress," which has connotations of a risqué late-night event.

This look is mostly translated into sexy and revealing evening dresses, and is the last item of clothing you would expect to act as an inspiration at an ultra-Orthodox synagogue in Brooklyn.

But that is precisely the idea. As Mimu Maxi designer Mimi Hecht told Vogue magazine, by teaming up a slip with more substantial layers you can make it look purposed for the modest look.

"We like to say, ‘Don’t work with the slip, work against it!’ Exaggerating the thin, slinky nature of the slip with heavier pieces only makes it more of a statement, and shows that you wore it with purpose, not as a last resort,” Hecht said.
