Organizers say they have selected Israeli-American violinist Itzhak Perlman as the 2016 recipient of Israel's $1 million Genesis Prize, known as the "Jewish Nobel."
The award is given each year to an individual who organizers say has achieved professional success, contributed to humanity and shown a strong commitment to Jewish causes and the state of Israel.
Organizers said Monday that they were recognizing Perlman, a 16-time Grammy winner, for his musical accomplishments, as well as his efforts to help develop promising young musicians and his advocacy for the disabled. Perlman contracted polio as a child and walks with crutches.
In a statement Monday, Perlman said he was "humbled" to be recognized not only for his personal accomplishments, but also his commitment to his Jewish identity.
