Shimon Peres taken to hospital

The former Israeli president complains of feeling pressure in his chest, but remains conscious.

An ambulance was summoned to the home of former Israeli President Shimon Peres on Sunday evening after he complained of feeling pressure in his chest. He remained conscious and those around Peres said that the paramedics were conducting an ECG test. The test revealed that he was suffering from mild arrythmia, and he was taken to Sheba Medical Center.

Peres' office released a statement saying that he would be spending the night in hospital in order to undergo further tests.

Peres, 92, suffered a mild heart attack 10 days ago and was taken to hospital where he underwent cardiac catheterization after complaining of chest pains. The operation successfully unblocked an artery.

He was released from hospital five days ago, and thanked well-wishers. He said he was "happy to return to work and excited to serve the country."

Peres has filled nearly every position in Israeli public life since he became the director general of the Defense Ministry at the age of 25 and spearheaded the development of Israel's nuclear program. A protégé of the country's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, Peres was first elected to parliament in 1959.

He has since held every major cabinet post – including defense, finance and foreign affairs – and served three brief stints as prime minister.
