World urged to invest in Jordan to create jobs for Syrians

AMMAN - The head of the International Labor Organization and Jordan's labor minister have called for large-scale international investment in the kingdom to help put Syrian refugees to work.

ILO chief Guy Ryder and labor minister Nidal Katamine spoke to reporters Thursday, ahead of next week's annual Syria aid conference, to be held in London.

The conference seeks to raise billions in aid, including for 4.3 million Syrian refugees. Most still live in neighboring countries, including in Jordan, but hundreds of thousands migrated to Europe last year because of the increasingly dire conditions in overburdened host countries.

Ryder says that in helping the host countries, the international community "will indeed not just be acting in the spirit of solidarity, but will actually be meeting its own needs."
