Georgian sentenced to 14 years for ISIS recruitment

 

TBILISI - A Georgian man has been convicted of recruiting people into the Islamic State group and sentenced to 14 years in prison.

 

In the same case, the court on Monday also sentenced two others to 11 and 10 years in prison for attempting to join the group and a fourth, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to one year.

 

The recruiter, Ayup Borchashvili, was an imam in the village of Dzhokolo in Georgia's Pankisi Gorge that is heavily populated by ethnic Chechens.

 

One of the area's residents, Tarkhan Batirashvili, became one of the top commanders of the Islamic State militants under the name of Omar al Shishani.
